RULES GOVERNING
SHOW APPROVAL
I. POINT APPROVED SHOWS
A. Point approved shows are those shows in the State of Michigan which have applied to the Michigan Horse Shows
Association for approved status, and to whom such status has been granted in writing and whose show dues for the
current season have been fully paid to the M.H.S.A. as outlined in paragraph C. below.
Approved show dates for shows requesting M.H.S.A. approval will be published in an official publication of the M.H.S.A.
giving show name, dates, location, and the name and address of the show contact. Show dates should be submitted to the
M.H.S.A. prior to February 1st for approval.
Point approved status does not in itself guarantee that all classes at a particular show will be counted toward a M.H.S.A.
Championship, the counting of points being contingent upon an observation of all the Rules of the Association by all the
affected parties.
B. No established horse show shall be disapproved by the Michigan Horse Show Association, Inc. without first notifying
the show committee or management group, in writing, that the Board of Directors of the Michigan Horse Show Association
has voted to withhold approval. After notification by the Michigan Horse Show Association, the show committee or
management group shall have at least two (2) weeks to present, in writing, its objections to the action of the Board of
Directors. The defenses of the show committee management group must be considered and allowed or disallowed at the
next regular meeting of the M.H.S.A Board of Directors.
C. Show Dues: Show dues shall be in the amount of $50.00 for one day and $100.00 for shows of two or more days,
except shows confined to one breed or section in which M.H.S.A. awards no more than seven (7) Annual Championships.
In such shows, the show dues will be one-half the regular rate or $25.00 for one day and $50.00 for shows of two or more
days.
II. RULES GOVERNING CLASS CONDUCT: To insure a standard for showing and judging of those classes counting toward
M.H.S.A. Championship awards, the following standards will apply:
A. For those breeds and disciplines covered by US Equestrian Federation rules, classes will be conducted as outlined in
the most recent US Equestrian Federation Rule Book.
B. For breeds and disciplines not covered by US Equestrian Federation rules, classes will be conducted as specified by
the recognized governing authority.
C. M.H.S.A. Challenges of the Breeds Open Classes will be conducted as specified elsewhere in these rules.
III. STATEMENT OF APPROVAL: Approved shows must state prominently in their Prize Lists MICHIGAN HORSE SHOW
ASSOCIATION POINT APPROVED SHOW. Only shows which have approved status in writing from the Association may
make this statement.
IV. PRIZE LISTS: All shows for which dates have been approved MUST submit their prize list to the M.H.S.A. at least thirty
(30) days prior to the published show date.
Prize lists must state fully the shows rating in all divisions and sections and the guaranteed prize money offered in each
class and division or section.
Prize lists must publish the name(s) of the judge(s) who is (are) to officiate.
Each show shall print it its program a clear specification that only current M.H.S.A. members will be awarded points for
their wins at the show. A copy of the M.H.S.A. Application for Membership shall be printed in the prize list.
Once published as point approved, the prize list may not be changed without the written consent of the Association if the
change would have any affect on classes counting toward any Championship. Nevertheless, show management may
CANCEL a class if it does not fill in accordance with published specifications. If specifications for filling are NOT
published, the class may NOT be cancelled if two or more exhibitors have paid their entry fees by class time.
Errors and/or discrepancies in prize list must be prominently posted at show office. M.H.S.A. must be notified, in writing,
of any correction, such notification to accompany the show results.
V. SHOW RESULTS: The Show Secretary must furnish, within thirty (30) days following the horse show, results complete
to the first four places, including the number of entries in each class. Computer printouts are acceptable if THE FIRST
FOUR PLACES ARE LISTED IN ORDER ON THE PAGE. The results must be accompanied by the SHOW PRIZE LIST.
VI. CONFLICT OF INTEREST: If two point approved shows are offered during the same weekend, there shall be NO
DUPLICATION OF CLASSES at the two shows.
VII. JUDGES: No judge shall judge in the same division in more than two (2) M.H.S.A. shows in any one season. At least
thirty (30) days must elapse between two shows at which a judge is judging in the same division. Show secretaries must
furnish judges with score cards for every class which must contain complete class specification. Judges must be
accredited as follows:
A. For shows offering classes for breed and disciplines covered by US Equestrian Federation rules, the judge must be
approved by US Equestrian Federation and have at least one small "r" in at least one of the divisions in which he is to
officiate.
B. For shows offering classes for breeds and disciplines not covered by US Equestrian Federation rules, the judge must
be approved by the governing body of at least one of the breeds he is to judge.
C. For shows offering only the Challenge of the Breed Open Classes, selection of competent judges will be left to the
discretion of the show committee.
D. It is recognized that certain highly competent judges have retired from active judging on a national scale and have
given up their national cards. As an exception to paragraphs A and B, above, such judges may officiate at M.H.S.A.
approved shows if all other requirements are met.
RULES GOVERNING
POINT SCORING
BASIC PREMISE OF THE POINT SYSTEM:
The basic premise of the point system requires that all exhibitors competing for a given championship be afforded an
equal opportunity to show. Classes which do not meet this requirement will not count.
A. Regular Points: All classes which fully comply with the championship specifications, which are open to all (or which
have complementary classes which give everyone equal opportunity to show) will be counted as "Regular Points" as
shown in paragraph C. below.
B. Double Points: Championship or Stake classes which offer at least $100.00 in prize money and which are preceded by
at least one qualifying class, will be awarded double points as shown in paragraph C. below.
C. Point Table:
PLACING 1st 2nd 3rd 4th
Double Points 20 12 8 4
Regular Points 10 6 4 2
Exception: In the Hunter Division points will be awarded in accordance with US Equestrian Federation Division Ratings.
D. Special consideration for Equitation: All classes, except championship, must be divided by age in accordance with
the championship specifications. (Further division of classes by age is acceptable as long as the division is within the age
group specified for the championship.) Classes so divided will be awarded Regular Points.
Championships may combine age groups and will be counted at the double point scale in the Saddle Seat, Stock Seat and
Hunter Seat Divisions. When Equitation classes are not divided by breed, points earned will be applied to the appropriate
breed Championships.
VIII. WINNINGS TO COUNT:
Only winnings at point approved shows by M.H.S.A. MEMBERS IN GOOD STANDING AT THE TIME THE POINTS ARE WON
will be considered toward M.H.S.A. Championship Awards.
M.H.S.A. YOUTH SHOW: Winnings at M.H.S.A. Youth Show will not be counted toward any M.H.S.A. Annual
Championship Award.
Halter Championship classes (both junior and senior where divided) will be counted toward Halter Championship Awards.
Grand Championships will not be counted.
IX. MINIMUM EARNING: To qualify for CHAMPION, the contestant must win at least one Blue Ribbon and must earn
points at no fewer than two shows. To qualify for RESERVE CHAMPION the contestant must earn points at no fewer than
two shows. Where no Champion is qualified, the RESERVE CHAMPIONSHIP will not be awarded and the results of the
competition for that Championship will not be published.
Where a point count results in a tie, the Championships will be awarded to the contestant having more Blue Ribbons. If
this fails to break the tie, the Championship will be awarded to the contestant having earned points at the most shows.
X. US EQUESTRIAN FEDERATION: Exhibitors and owners shall, in every case, conduct themselves in accordance with
the rules of the M.H.S.A. and the US Equestrian Federation wherever applicable. The Rules of the US Equestrian
Federation shall take precedence in the event of a conflict, unless otherwise specified. Willful or repeated violation of the
Rules shall be cause for cancellation of points won, as may be determined by the Board of Directors of M.H.S.A. which
shall be the final judge.
XI. EXHIBITOR'S RESPONSIBILITY: It shall be the responsibility of the exhibitor to carefully, accurately and legibly
complete the ENTRY FORMS for each show. The Association will not be responsible for misspellings that deprive a horse
or owner of points.
Upon sale or lease of a horse in mid-season, the points thus far accrued will follow the horse and be credited to the new
owner or lessee, provided that such new owner is a current M.H.S.A. member.
If the name of the horse is changed during the show season, it shall be the responsibility of the owner to notify the
Administrator of the Association in writing. Points lost by failure to comply with this rule are the responsibility of the
owner.
AMATEUR STATUS: All persons wishing to show in Amateur Classes at M.H.S.A. approved shows must either present a
current US Equestrian Federation Amateur Card to the show secretary or must sign an affidavit attesting that he or she is
an Amateur as defined by US Equestrian Federation (Note: At shows also approved by US Equestrian Federation, an US
Equestrian Federation Amateur Card will be required).
XII. PROTESTS, VIOLATIONS AND PENALTIES: A protest pertaining to the Rules, Point System of the M.H.S.A. or conduct
of a recognized show may be made to the Show Committee by an exhibitor, an agent, or the parent of a junior exhibitor.
The procedure should follow that outlined in the US Equestrian Federation Rules Book, Rules VI and VII for protests
directed to the M.H.S.A. In such matters, the M.H.S.A. Board of Directors will act as the Hearing Committee.
XIII. MEASUREMENT CARDS: In classes restricted to ponies, no animal may be shown in a performance class or a
breeding class unless the owner possesses a current measurement card issued by the US Equestrian Federation or by an
affiliated Association (Such as M.H.S.A.) or unless an official measurement form is completed at the show in which the
animal is entered.
XIV. CHAMPIONSHIP AWARD PUBLICATION: Award publicity shall not be published until after the actual award
presentation at the Annual Awards Banquet. Violation by member shall be cause for cancellation of all points earned by
the exhibitor.
XV. CHAMPIONSHIP AWARDS: The Michigan Horse Show Association will offer the following high-point Championship
Awards. M.H.S.A. will give consideration to adding additional awards for any breed or discipline.
